At Saraswathi Institute of Medical Sciences, Hapur, the department was established in 2008 and is committed to providing the highest quality of care in the field of women’s health, including teaching.
Growth and Development
Over the years, the department has grown in size to impart undergraduate education. Postgraduate teaching started in 2015 by enrolling two students, which increased to six students per year since 2020. The department strives to keep pace with the ever-increasing advances in the field of medicine and is committed to providing respectful maternity care. Currently, the department provides round-the-clock services, including high-risk obstetrics and gynecological emergencies.
Leadership and Research
In addition to providing the latest in patient care, the department, under dynamic leadership, strives to maintain a high standard of research and trains young doctors to become experts in the field.
Training Programs
Apart from postgraduate courses, the department offers training to senior residents who obtain comprehensive experience in all subspecialties of obstetrics and gynecology.
Commitment to National Programs
As part of its commitment to the National Family Planning Program, the department has an active family planning unit that offers reversible and permanent contraception methods. The department also plays an active role in managing the Comprehensive Rural and Urban Health Centre attached to the institute and provides outreach OPD services. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the department extended its COVID care services as part of the level III referral hospital.
Ongoing Research
Currently, more than 18 non-funded projects are ongoing in the department, including theses and dissertations. The department is also conducting three projects in collaboration with other departments.

Objectives
The specific learning objectives for obstetrics & gynecology include:
- Providing exposure to a wide variety of obstetric and gynecologic problems in both in-patient and out-patient settings.
- Performing obstetric and gynecologic history and physical examinations, interpreting findings, and ensuring accurate documentation.
- Applying clinical findings to develop appropriate diagnoses and management plans for common obstetric and gynecologic problems.
- Developing expertise in routine antenatal, intrapartum, and postpartum care.
- Providing MTP services and recognizing factors contributing to unplanned pregnancies.
- Conducting comprehensive gynecologic examinations and developing management plans for common gynecologic problems.
- Demonstrating effective communication, respect for patient rights, and legal responsibilities.
- Engaging in self-directed learning, continuous quality improvement, and evidence-based medicine.

- Screening and management of genital tract cancers
- Treatment of various gynecological illnesses

- Contraceptive counseling and family planning services
Indoor Services
Indoor services are provided in the obstetrics and gynecology wards, with routine and specialized antenatal and postnatal care available. The obstetric ward is equipped with a CTG machine for fetal monitoring and a Doppler ultrasound for in-patient assessment.

Outreach Activities
The department is associated with Hapur district HOGSI and engages in continued medical education programs, guest lectures, and community-oriented activities such as urban health centers and health camps in rural areas and schools.
