SARASWATHI INSTITUTE OF MEDICAL SCIENCES

Department of Pharmacology

PharmacologyPharmacology

Pharmacology is the science of drugs that encompasses all aspects of knowledge about drugs, particularly those relevant to effective and safe medicinal use. For thousands of years, most drugs were crude natural products of unknown composition and limited efficacy. Animal experiments aimed at understanding physiological processes began in the 18th century, pioneered by F. Magendie and Claude Bernard. Oswald Schmiedeberg is regarded as the ‘father of pharmacology’. Pharmacology forms the backbone of rational therapeutics. The Pharmacovigilance ADR monitoring center is run under the pharmacology department at SIMS, one of the AMC ADR Monitoring Centres under NCC (NPvPI)-IPC, Government of India.
