The department of Psychiatry was established in Saraswathi Institute of Medical Sciences in 2008. The department is dedicated to providing excellence in teaching, research and comprehensive services for mental health related problems, along with the application of newer advances and procedures for the best outcome in management and patient satisfaction. The department is actively involved in clinical cases, teaching of Undergraduate and Postgraduate students, Research and Community work. The department is dedicated to offering consultations and counseling in safe and confidential settings like the specialized clinic and general OPD services. Psychiatric social work is another important area that is tackled through a departmental dedicated team and social worker available in the department who conducts home visits apart from socio-occupational re-integration of patients.
Currently the department has 4 Faculty members, 8 post graduates. The faculty in the department is actively involved in research and are experienced and involved in imparting skills and knowledge to the students and dedicated to patient care. The curriculum and training in this department is at par with national institutes. All the residents take part actively in the PG teaching programs that includes journal clubs, case presentation and discussions. They are also trained with hands-on experience in imparting specialized services like ElectroConvulsive therapy, Biofeedback and psycho diagnostic testing. The alumni from the department hold teaching and non-teaching posts in various national institutes all over the country. The faculty and residents also actively participate in different CME’s, Conferences, Seminars held at different platforms across the country.

Vision
Education and Training: Providing undergraduate and postgraduate medical students with comprehensive education and training in psychiatry. This includes theoretical knowledge, clinical skills, and practical experience in the diagnosis and treatment of mental health disorders.
Research: Conducting research and presenting them at different platforms and forums to advance the understanding of mental health disorders, their causes, treatment modalities, and outcomes. This research can contribute to the development of new therapies, interventions, and policies aimed at improving mental healthcare delivery.
Clinical Services: Offering high-quality clinical services to patients suffering from mental health issues. This involves assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing management of psychiatric disorders, Marital counseling, family counseling, children screening and guidance including both outpatient and inpatient care when necessary.
Mission
Community Outreach and Awareness: Engaging in community outreach programs to raise awareness about mental health issues, reduce stigma, and promote mental well-being. This may involve organizing workshops, seminars, and awareness campaigns in collaboration with local communities and organizations.
Collaboration and Networking: Collaborating and liaison with other departments in the hospital, with other healthcare providers, mental health professionals, and institutions to ensure integrated and holistic care for individuals with mental health concerns. This collaboration may extend to government agencies, non-profit organizations, and community groups working in the field of mental health.
Policy Advocacy: Advocating for policies and initiatives that promote mental health awareness, access to care, and support for individuals with mental health disorders. This may involve lobbying for increased funding for mental health services, implementation of mental health legislation, and integration of mental health into primary healthcare systems.
By fulfilling these aims, our department aims to contribute significantly to addressing the mental health needs of the population, training future generations of mental health professionals, and advancing knowledge and understanding in the field of psychiatry.

Facilities Available in the Department
- Mental Health Review: Our experienced medical team evaluates patients' underlying mental health conditions and makes appropriate treatment recommendations.
- Treatment of Mental health problems: We treat depression, anxiety, psychosis and other mental problems, which can be genetic or neurotransmitter defects.
- Medication Management: Patient tailored treatment protocol is made and given for patients best interest.
- Mental Health Education and Training: We conduct education and training programs to make the society aware about the importance of mental health and address the people about it.
- Medical Consultation and Support: We provide support and consultation to patients and their family members, so that they can enjoy a higher level of health and well-being.
- Counseling facility: Specialized and patient specific counseling is provided by well trained faculties in the department.
- Support and Community Services: We provide support groups, community groups, and social services that encourage positive change in mental health.

- Monday – Psychosexual Clinic
- Wednesday – Dementia and Geriatric Clinic
- Thursday – Psychomotor Clinic
- Friday – De-Addiction and Drug Abuse Clinic
- Saturday – Child and Adolescent Clinic
- Alcoholics Anonymous: An alcoholism support and recovery self-help group for members whose purpose is to stay sober and help others recover from alcohol use disorder. Members share their experience, strength and hope with each other.
- District Residency Program: Our Postgraduate students go for a mandatory 3 month District Residency Programme (DRP) by National Medical Commission (NMC) in district hospitals allowing our post graduate students to watch, examine, and treat while learning about locally prevalent conditions.
- Outreach programmes:
- School visits: Regular regional school visits are organized by departments’ faculty and postgraduates for screening of Neuro-developmental disorders and mental health problems.
- Old Age home visits: Regular regional Old Age home visits are organized by departments’ faculty and postgraduates for screening of primary psychiatric disturbances of older age.
Our aim is to spread awareness about the common mental health problems and provide patients with a safe, warm and supportive environment and support their mental health.

Studying Psychiatry at the Department of Psychiatry in Saraswathi Institute of Medical Sciences College has been an incredibly enriching experience for me. I, Dr. Payal, am a PG resident in Psychiatry at Saraswathi Institute of Medical Sciences. It's a good experience to be a part of such an esteemed institute with nice, supportive, highly skilled and educated faculty. They have always gone the extra mile in explaining the concepts and new things in such a simple way that makes learning very intriguing. Worth mentioning is the infrastructure of the college which gives a refreshing feel every day.
